History of movies
Cinematography is actually a film or the ability of filming.
Actually it was Eadweard Muybridge who started the groundwork of the movie art. When he recorded a moving horse by editing (photo) cameras in a row, it became the basis of the cinematography.
With the help of the 1889 released transparent negative film tape, it was possible for Thomas Edison and William Dickson to invent a new device.
Their invention, the kinetoscope contained a continuous film strip with separate images. If these images were demonstrated shortly, the spectator got the impression that he saw a moving picture.
Still it were the brothers Lumière (Louis and Auguste), who had introduced the film art to the audience. The demonstration was in Paris and Atoine Lumière (their father) saw the benefit of this immediately.
Louis and Auguste noted, that there were 2 big hindrances on the kinetoscope: that only one person can make an use of this device and that it was too big and heavy to carry it to several places.
At the beginning of 1895, the brothers had finished their own version of the kinetoscope. That of the cinematograph. The difference was that the cinematograph eliminated the 2 drawbacks. It weighed at least 5 kilograms and it was easily to control it by hand.
It also became possible for a couple of people to watch it. Because the cinematograph consisted of a projector, what could imaged everything on a wall.
One of the things Lumière said, was: “Le cinéma est une invention sans avenir.” Or in English: the cinema is an invention without a future.
Well, nobody knew that Louis Lumière would be beside the mark, with this statement.
When the developing of the cinematography was finished, they concentrated their self more on the commercial oriented development film art.
The first 3 months of 1896, the theatres were opened in London, Brussels and New York, were it was all about the rolling of movies.
Originally there was more interest in movies from the French corner. What was not surprising, because France was certainly the central of the movies.
But it didn’t took long before the USA – or Hollywood- took over the leadership.
It was especially the director D.W. Griffith who increased the success of Hollywood, who started to produce a lot of movies from 1908. Off course these movies were still silent and the colour was still rare.
After the silent movie era, it became possible to synchronise the sound with the picture, or movies with sound.
Short after this developing, the coloured movies came in to the cinematography.
After a lot of talented actors became a star on the white screen, it became a fact that the interest of the ordinary people, in the cinematography, was a clear fact.
